Grab your halos, devil horns, cowboy hats, and vampire teeth because Halloween is just about here! And RACC’s student government association (SGA) is giving students an opportunity to haunt the campus.
On Monday, Oct. 31, SGA is having a Halloween extravaganza from 8 a.m.- 3 p.m. in the Ravens Lounge (located in the Student Union building). Costumed students will be able to compete for prizes and collect free candy compliments of SGA. Everyone is welcome so bring family and friends who love the spooky holiday! Especially the ones who love to dress up and love to say boo.
“Students can have a sense of childhood while supporting the community college atmosphere,” said Danielle Spencer, SGA president. “The best costume receives prizes and [there is] candy for 1st 2nd and 3rd place.”
If students come to the Ravens Lounge in costume between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m, SGA members will photograph the students, and the students will be entered into the costume contest. Judges will select winners in three different categories: most original, most scary, and most funny.
Though students are encouraged to have fun, there are some safety restrictions: no weapons of any kind, no masks, no toys, and no inappropriate attire.
Candy will be given to people in costume from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There were three winners last year: Tana Acosta, Wesley Gehman, and Nina Gonzalez. Tana’s high-concept costume, a riff on “raining cats and dogs” was chosen as the funniest. Acosta carried an umbrella with stuffed cats and dog fastened to it. Gehman came as the Joker, securing him the spot of scariest costume. Gonzalez won most original by dressing up as Sue Gelsinger, former Student Life Coordinator.
Acosta’s creativity was inspired by a desire to buck the trends.
“To be honest: I find the majority of Halloween costumes to be clichéd,” Acosta explained “and I wanted to do something different.”
And Acosta’s creativity seems to haunt the podium. The year before last, Acosta won funniest costume by dressing up as “life” and handing out lemons. “I wanted to keep with that and do something funny again. I was happy I was able to pull it off,” she said.
Here’s hoping this year’s students can top Acosta’s clever costume, or spook the judges better than Gehman.
If students have any questions or need more information, they are encouraged to contact Spencer, Student Life Coordinator Kimberly Uphold (kuphold@racc.edu), or to go to RACC’s website for rules and regulations.
