The Places We Go: Fall Break

By Judith Croteau

Revitalization over Fall Break doesn’t mean you have to go far or spend a lot of money.

Right about midterm, most college students need to get away for a bit so that they can hold on until the break between semesters. With the arrival of the Columbus Day weekend–which is RACC’s two-day fall break–students have a chance for that relief.

If you’ve caught up enough on your schoolwork and you need to give the brain a break, you might use the extended weekend to take advantage of the following outings.

Less than an hour away, in Philadelphia, is the Old City Fest on Sunday, October 9. Plan to go down Saturday afternoon, and spend Saturday night going out to dinner and then pub crawling. Grab a place to bunk at one of Philadelphia’s many hotels using a price-aggregating travel website (like Expedia) or try a room-renting site (like AirBnB). Then, spend Sunday (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) strolling Third and Arch Streets, where you will find food, fun, and entertainment. Check out Visit Philadelphia for other recommendations for weekend fun in the city.

For those looking for a less urban escape, try the Adventure Center at Skytop Lodge. This resort has zipline courses and paintball fields as well as hiking and kayaking. At the end of the day, check out the lodge, which offers food and, of course, the Tap Room.

Finally, for those of you who want a challenge or to impress that special someone with your ingenuity, check out PA Escape Rooms, which offers staged entrapment puzzles. You and your team must follow clues and solve a mystery in order to escape within a given time. One of the current challenges gives participants just 60 minutes to find a pirate treasure. Gather a group of friends or join a new crew of shipmates! This outing might not be the break from thinking that you wanted, but you will have an adventure like no other.

Enjoy your fall break. And if you have a great place to get away, let us know at fsj@racc.edu.
